Practical legal and paperwork help after a death, so grieving families can secure certificates, claims, and rights without getting lost in offices.

Full story

After the funeral, a second exhaustion begins. Families need a death certificate, bank nominee papers, pension or insurance claims, school records for children, property documents, and sometimes a succession or legal heir certificate. Offices ask for copies, stamps, and visits on working days. A person in mourning is expected to become a clerk overnight.

Many households, especially those with limited literacy or no one who can take unpaid leave, simply stall. A widow may not know she is entitled to a pension. A father may not know how to transfer a small savings account. Children can lose school continuity because a certificate is missing. Delay is not laziness. It is grief colliding with a system that does not slow down.

GiVa Legal & Documentation Support sits in that gap. NiVan Foundation does not replace a lawyer for complex property disputes. We walk families through the documents that follow a death: what is needed, which office to visit, how to fill forms, and when a referral to a qualified professional is required. Volunteers and documentation assistants help gather papers, make copies, and keep a simple checklist so nothing essential is forgotten.

This campaign funds those assistants, modest legal-aid referrals for families who cannot pay, travel to government offices, and printed guidance in clear language. It also funds training so our team never gives reckless legal advice and always knows when to stop and refer.

Your donation turns a maze into a path. When paperwork is completed, families can access the small securities that already belong to them. That is not charity in the old sense. It is accompaniment through a bureaucracy that grief was never designed to face.

The need

Death creates an immediate documentation burden: certificates, bank and pension claims, school records, and legal heir papers. The people affected are surviving spouses, elderly parents, and children, often with little literacy or time away from wage work. Without help, families lose benefits they are entitled to, or they pay middlemen. Intervention is necessary so grief is not compounded by administrative abandonment, and so basic rights after a death can actually be claimed.

How your gift helps

Donations pay for documentation assistants who sit with families, prepare checklists, and accompany them to offices when needed. Funds cover copies, affidavits, and travel for verified cases. A share supports referrals to qualified legal aid for succession or claim issues beyond our scope. Remaining funds train volunteers on ethical boundaries and keep simple, confidential case files. Money is used to complete paperwork and unlock existing entitlements, not to pay unofficial bribes.

Expected impact

We aim to support 70 families with documentation after a death. Expected outcomes include 70 death-certificate and related paperwork pathways opened, at least 40 pension, insurance, or bank-nominee claims initiated, and 25 school or dependent-document cases completed for children. About 15 families will be referred to qualified legal aid. Success is measured in files completed, claims submitted, and families who no longer have to face government counters without a companion.

I did not know which office to visit after my wife died. Someone sat with me, made a list, and came for the death certificate. The pension papers are moving. I could breathe for the first time in weeks.

Help a family complete the paperwork that grief makes impossible alone.
